Tseng Yu Chin

His life is a powerful testament to the brutality of the Chinese-speaking world. Born into a family with a complicated background and mental confusion, he was abused and harassed because of his homosexuality. Art became his means of survival.

He began with objects, digital photography and experimental video. At the age of 29, his series "Who is listening" was selected for the 12th Kassel Documenta in Germany. He won the Chinese Contemporary Art Prize and became one of the most important video artists in the world.

His work explores the political contrasts between authoritarian China and democratic Taiwan. He combines Western and Eastern aesthetics and breaks with the rigid visual language of global art. His works address bullying, ignorance, queer issues, childhood abuse, physical identity, social and political indifference, racism, discrimination and homelessness.

With his unique style and presentation, the Chinese-speaking world calls him: a unique, but not to be ignored, presence!
