EMANATION OF VOID

a cooperation between kunstraumarcade and AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich

The exhibition EMANATION OF VOID brings together two artistic positions that explore the relationship between image and space, flatness and spatiality. The common denominator is the “emanation” of spatial emptiness or, more precisely, the aesthetic and visual impacts of emptiness on recipients. Whereas German artist Lisa Klinger clearly reveals figurative and representative elements in her abstract, defamiliarized black-and-white drawings, with Swiss-Austrian artist Silvia Maria Grossmann space is manifested—via the “medium” of landscape— atmospherically and as a potentially expandable expanse, imaginable even beyond the boundaries of the image format. Both Klinger’s and Grossmann’s work moves from the representational and recognizable towards abstraction and the dissolution of the pictorial reference. Here Klinger defamiliarizes her subject matter via the medium of drawing; what’s more the elements or “figures” depicted are themselves in part highly abstract, for instance in their portrayal of corners of rooms or inverse volumes and recesses (wall cavities). Grossmann’s landscape photographs, on the other hand, depict, in reverse so to speak, abstractions of concrete, spatial elements. Thus, ice floes floating in the water, almost appearing to harbor spatial geometric cubes, are made tangible, even representational within a foggy landscape verging on the abstract.
