Pauline Garavan

In the frame of the exhibition at NÖ Dokumentationszentrum für Moderne Kunst

Pauline Garavan lives and works in Westport, Ireland, in a studio by our exchange partners Custom House Studios and Gallery. She is intensely concerned with nature, from which she develops a subtle formal language for her paintings and objects. Influenced by old masters, especially Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch, she describes herself as an old-fashioned artist. She appreciates detail in paintings, something that is often only visible on close inspection. Westport in County Mayo is an ideal environment for her as she is close to nature and feels part of it.

My working process involves a very slow exploration of the subject. I don't use sketchbooks. Instead, I work through it in my head and imagine images, which I then carefully translate into colour and form"
(from a conversation with Áine Ryan of Mayo News).
