Krems is located directly on the banks of the Danube, the second longest river in Europe. It is roughly 80 km from Vienna and
30 km from the state capital, St. Pölten. Nestled amongst vineyards, Krems is one of the oldest cities in the country, and boasts a history that goes back more than a thousand years. The city is the gateway to the Wachau, one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe. The old part of town is full of historical buildings, which give it a unique flair. In 2000 Krems and the Wachau region were declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
In addition to the studio apartments, the building also houses other cultural institutions referred to the Kunstmeile Krems: the Artothek Niederösterreich, the Unabhängige Literaturhaus Niederösterreich, the Susanne Wenger Foundation, the ORTE Architekturnetzwerk NÖ and Die kleinste Baukultur-Galerie Österreichs. Located nearby are also the Kunsthalle Krems, the Karikaturmuseum, the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich (Grand opening spring 2019), Klangraum Krems/Minoritenkirche, Forum Frohner, Ernst Krenek Forum, the Kino im Kesselhaus, Donau-Universität Krems.
In the citycenter you also find Galerie Stadtpark, Galerie Göttlicher and the Museum Krems with the Dominikaner Kirche.
Krems also boasts numerous platforms for contemporary music, hosting, for example, the Donaufestivals as well as the festivals Glatt&Verkehrt, HerbstZeitlos and Imago Dei.
"Lower Austria Contemporary" sees itself as an open platform for independent art institutions in Lower Austria and shows that there is also scope for contemporary art outside the metropolises.
