History

On the initiative of the Lower Austrian state government, the artist studios were set up on the top floor of a former carpet factory in Krems and officially handed over to serve their purpose in October 2000 by the then deputy governor Liese Prokop. This formed the basis for building an ARIST IN RESIDENCE program to promote art and cultural exchange.

As part of general restructuring, the AIR - ARTIST IN RESIDENCE program was transferred from the control of the Lower Austrian state government to that of the Kunstmeile Krems Betriebs GmbH that runs it since 2006.

Since 2006 AIR - ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich has been a member of res artis – worldwide network of artist residencies.

By 2017, 744 visiting artists from the disciplines architecture, Art, Literature and Music had taken part in our ARTIST IN RESIDENCE program.
