Mission

Offering studio apartments in Krems, the AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria program exists to promote international cultural exchange. The multidisciplinary scholarship program allows visual artists, architects, musicians and writers to temporarily live in Lower Austria, whilst working and discovering the diversity of the local cultural landscape. As part of an institutional exchange in Europe and overseas, AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria organizes stays abroad for artists from Lower Austria.

Approximately 50 scholarship holders are selected by AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria and project partners (Land Niederösterreich – Abteilung Kunst und KulturGalerie Stadtpark KremsKunsthalle KremsKarikaturmuseum Krems, NÖ Festival und Kino GmbH (www.klangraum.at, www.donaufestival.at, www.glattundverkehrt.at)ORTE – Architekturnetzwerk NÖUnabhängiges Literaturhaus NÖ) every year. These are subsequently invited to Krems and are supported in the realization of their artistic projects during their entire stay.

To do justice to the diversity of contemporary artistic practices, AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria promotes the networking of artists and their practices with existing art and cultural institutions in Lower Austria and Vienna. The program enables and supports on-site work, the realization of exhibitions, concerts, readings and workshops. In essence it supports the execution of anything that falls within the broadest understanding of possible artistic forms of articulation and presentation. It also promotes the contextualization and discursive reflection of working methods. The difference in approaches and aesthetic activities form the starting point for possible discussions and thematic examinations. As well as providing insight into artistic processes, modes of thinking, identification and identity designs, the program also aspires to reveal potential connections between different positions with regard to identity, history and culture, i.e. making apparent socio-cultural self-positioning. This, in turn, is essential to increasing discourse around the Lower Austrian art and culture scene and in turn helps its internationalization.

History

On the initiative of the Lower Austrian state government, the artist studios were set up on the top floor of a former carpet factory in Krems and officially handed over to serve their purpose in October 2000 by the then deputy governor Liese Prokop. This formed the basis for building an ARIST IN RESIDENCE program to promote art and cultural exchange.

As part of general restructuring, the AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE program was transferred from the control of the Lower Austrian state government to that of the Kunstmeile Krems Betriebs GmbH that runs it since 2006.

Since 2006 AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich has been a member of res artis – worldwide network of artist residencies.

By 2019, 839 visiting artists form 71 countries from the disciplines architecture, Art, Literature and Music had taken part in our ARTIST IN RESIDENCE program.
