Susana Baca is the most important singer of Afro-Peruvian music. Her importance in this field rests on two pillars: first, she possesses an expressive voice and an incomparable stage presence. Second, for decades she has been deeply involved in the heritage of African, indigenous and European elements in the music of Peru. She carries the scientific side of her life project together with her husband, musicologist Ricardo Pereira. The couple has created an institute in Lima for the study of Afro-Peruvian music (Instituto Negro Continuo).
